Here Comes Winter! Skincare Tips for the Months Ahead

Winter takes a toll on everyone’s skin, but dry indoor heated rooms, cold, wind and heavy clothing can pose special challenges when you have psoriasis. A combination of dry air, decreased sunlight exposure, colder temperatures and holiday stress can all contribute to winter psoriasis flares.

In additional to seasonal environmental and emotional factors, people who have psoriasis need to be especially cautious about contracting strep throat, which usually strikes in winter months. A strep infection will cause psoriasis to flare badly, so it is wise to pay attention for any symptoms of strep and see your dermatologist if you are experiencing any symptoms.

But instead of yearning for summer, those with psoriasis should view winter as a chance to pamper yourself and control psoriasis at the same time. Try these psoriasis care tips as the weather turns colder:

Smooth on Moisturizer: The drier your skin gets, due to less humidity in the outside and inside air, the worse the psoriasis patches can look and feel. Keep your skin moist to reduce redness and itching to help heal psoriasis patches. The thicker the cream or ointment, the better it is at locking moisture into your skin. Use moisturizing soap and a creamy lotion after you shower, bathe or wash your hands. Choose fragrance-free products to avoid allergic reactions.

Choose Soothing Baths over Hot Showers: Long showers in hot water remove moisture from your skin. Shower in warm water just long enough to soap up and rinse off. Or relax in the tub. Add bath oil, oilated oatmeal, Epsom salts, or Dead Sea salts in a warm bath. Soak for about 15 minutes to slough off psoriasis scales, soothe itching and unwind. Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing.

Use a Humidifier: To wake up with moist and smooth skin, use a humidifier. Run it in your bedroom at night to counter the drying effects of indoor heating.

Wear Soft Layers: Frosty temperatures and wind can irritate your skin, triggering psoriasis flare-ups. They can also make psoriatic arthritis more painful. Dress in layers that you can peel off to avoid getting overheated as sweating can make psoriasis worse. Avoid wool, denim and other fabrics which are more likely to irritate your skin than cotton.

Drink Water: To pump up moisture, drink plenty of water.

Ease Stress: The winter holidays are full of cheer, but they also bring stress, which can make psoriasis flare. Plan time to relax during the holidays. Try a massage or moisturizing spa treatment. Exercise is a terrific stress reliever and may help protect you from flare-ups. Anything that helps you relax―including meditative yoga, listening to music or reading a book―can help keep your stress and your psoriasis under control.

Lighten Your Mood: Psoriasis increases your risk of depression. If you also have seasonal affective disorder―depression linked to less sunlight in winter and fall―these months are an extra challenge. If you’re consistently sad or depressed, talk to your dermatologist. He or she may suggest phototherapy to lift your mood.

Tis the Season for a Phyto-Pumpkin Enzyme Peel

As a recently formulated alternative to glycolic, phyto-pumpkin enzyme peels are ideal for patients with sensitive or intolerant skin or rosacea. The pumpkin enzyme comprising the peel contains hundreds of valuable nutrients that can reverse signs of aging and return your skin to a more youthful appearance. With powerful antioxidants, this all-natural peel deep cleans and exfoliates, restoring skin to a vibrant and healthy-looking state.

At Windsor Dermatology, patients enjoy the instant results that this peel delivers along with its antioxidant and moisture-enhancing properties. The beta-carotene and Vitamin A present in this peel deliver smoother, firmer skin, along with a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

How Does a Phyto-Pumpkin Enzyme Work?

As a natural skin repair therapy for patients who may be sensitive to chemical peels, the non-abrasive phyto-pumpkin enzyme peel is an excellent treatment alternative for acne, Rosacea, fine lines, wrinkles, darks spots and discolorations. The phyto-pumpkin enzyme peel is rich in nutrients and antioxidants that rejuvenate and restore younger-looking skin.

This all-natural peel contains Vitamin A and beta-carotene, powerful antioxidants that restore moisture to the skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and remove damaging free radicals that disrupt the production of healthy new cells. And while this peel is on your face, you’re sure to enjoy the luscious smell as it works to return your skin to a noticeable glow and a more even skin tone.

How Often Do I Need a Phyto-Pumpkin Enzyme Peel?

You will see visible results after only one treatment, but because phyto-pumpkin enzyme peels are so much milder than chemical peels, it may take several treatments to achieve the results you’re seeking. Our aesthetician will recommend the number of treatments necessary for your condition, and the proper schedule for you to follow, until your desired outcome is achieved. Many patients choose to maintain their results with additional treatments, based upon the aesthetician’s guidance and recommendations.

What Can I Expect After Each Treatment?

A phyto-pumpkin enzyme peel is a gentle treatment for common skin problems that can be administered in only a matter of minutes. In fact, many patients schedule the procedure during their lunch breaks and return to work or other daily activities immediately following the procedure. Because it is formulated for sensitive skin, you shouldn’t experience any side effects as a result of treatment.

What Are the Overall Benefits of a Phyto-Pumpkin Enzyme Peel?

After your phyto-pumpkin enzyme peel, your skin will feel suppler and your face will be softer and smoother due to the action of the various nutrients in this treatment. You may notice a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin tone may appear more even and your complexion may be brighter. And with time, healthy new cells will replace the old dead cells.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is one of the most popular and effective anti-aging skincare treatments available today. Often called an “instant facelift,” microdermabrasion reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin tone, clarity and texture, unclogs pores and decreases pore size and diminishes skin discoloration, age spots and scarring.

At Windsor Dermatology, many of our patients have discovered that microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, safe and pain-free alternative to traditional plastic surgery, helping their skin to achieve a more youthful, smoother and brighter appearance.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

Microdermabrasion is usually performed on the face, chest, neck, arms and/or hands. Using a crystal-free, medical-grade diamond tip, our aesthetician uses a hand-held device to guide the tip across your skin to loosen and exfoliate dead skin from the uppermost layer.  A gentle vacuum-like suction then removes the dead and damaged cells from your skin.  Diamond tips are available in different sizes and the aesthetician can apply varying degrees of abrasion, depending on skin type, the condition that is being addressed and the level of resurfacing required.

Diamond-tip microdermabrasion is safe and effective for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

How Often Do I Need Microdermabrasion Treatments?

Microdermabrasion treatments build upon each other, and patients may notice some improvement after only one treatment. However, the aesthetician will be able to advise you on the number of recommended treatments after an initial consultation and assessment.

Usually three to six sessions are required to achieve optimal results. These will be scheduled at intervals ranging from several days to two weeks, depending upon the initial assessment and expected treatment outcomes.  Many of our patients choose to maintain their results with additional treatments every four to six weeks following their initial treatments. Each treatment lasts approximately 30-60 minutes.

What Can I Expect After Each Treatment?

Many patients schedule their microdermabrasion treatments on their lunch breaks because there is minimal discomfort and no disruption in daily activities associated with this procedure. Your skin may appear to be mildly sunburned following treatment, and you will be more sensitive to the effects of sunlight exposure. Therefore, you should avoid sun exposure for the first 24 hours following each treatment and apply a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 as your skin continues to heal. Makeup can be applied three-four hours following each facial treatment.

What Are the Overall Benefits of Microdermabrasion?

Your skin will appear younger-looking and firmer. Age spots and acne scars will fade or even disappear. You’ll notice improved skin texture and a smoother appearance. And you’ll receive plenty of compliments about your fresher and more youthful appearance!
